The National Leadership Symposium, organized for the first time this year by the Air Force Academy, was held on 24-25 March 2011. Prof. Dr. Acar Baltas moderated the “Leadership in Business Life” panel in this symposium.
The Symposium, which was held with the main theme of “Leadership in the Modern Age”, informed the Air Force Academy students about current approaches in leadership with its guests from the business world. Under the title of current approaches in leadership, many academics spoke on the topics of “leadership characteristics, development of leaders’ potential, corporate leadership and biographies of important leaders”.
Prof. Dr. Directed by Acar Baltas, Dr. Zeynel Abidin Erdem and Dr. He summarized the session, in which Cem Kozlu was also a speaker, as follows. “Military history writer Freeman advised future leaders to “know their job, be a man and take care of their men”. Perhaps one of the simplest and most concise definitions of leadership independent of time and culture is hidden in this expression. If we want to put this expression in today’s concepts, “knowing your job” We can say that it is related to professional competence, while other characteristics are related to personality, competence and character. Based on the research and my experiences, we can add “listening” in the competence dimension and “decision and determination” in the personality dimension to these concepts.
Based on this simple definition of leadership in the “Leadership in the Business World” session; “The characteristics of real leaders who have a strong personality and value system, who do not compromise under pressure, and whose team members are wholeheartedly devoted were discussed.”
